Review

" Raphael Wallfisch played the six Bach Unaccompanied 'Cello Suites over two wonderful evening concerts in St Mary's Church Winchfield on 30th September and 1st October. Very little is known about the origins of the Suites, so Raphael brought them to life by introducing each Suite with readings of letters and diary excerpts by Bach and his friends and family which show Bach to have been a man of humour, modesty and charm. Raphael also played an Unaccompanied 'Cello Fantasia by Gabrielli written just 40 years before the Bach Suites which demonstrated the enormous advance in compositional sophistication which Bach achieved. Raphael played the last (sixth) Suite on a5-string cello (as Bach intended). Five-string cellos are very hard to find so Raphael had to commission a new instrument during the Covid pandemic just so that he could do full justice to the piece - the result was well worth the effort. St Mary's was a perfect venue for the suites - a small and beautiful space with a clear acoustic, and the audience were thrilled"
