‘From Gibbons to Gershwin’ This programme is a collection of varied repertoire which maps out a musical journey that spans over 500 years and three continents. It contains some of Voces8 classic repertoire with songs by Gibbons, Byrd and Purcell as well as items by Leonard Bernstein, Lionel Bart and George Gershwin. The programme includes arrangements written especially for Voces8. The multi international award winning a cappella octet, Voces8, is formed of a group of professional singers from in and around London. The repertoire performed by Voces8 is extensive, ranging from early 13th century polyphony through to 20th century pop songs. As well as performing this diverse array of music, Voces8 also perform music arranged specifically for the group to sing. |
It was in Italy that Voces8 achieved their first major success, winning two international awards at the 44th International Choral Grand Prix in Gorizia for Best Jazz Act and the Audience Prize for Best Performance. Recently the group returned from a tour of Spain, where they added to the collection of awards by winning 1st place in the Sacred Music and Profane Music categories, as well as scoring the highest number of points in the Grand Prix, at the European Choral Grand Prix in Tolosa.
In 2005, the group went into the recording studio and produced a debut album. The album, called ‘Step Into the Light’, contains a variety of light arrangements of jazz
standards, show tunes, Beatles numbers and music by Gilbert & Sullivan. Most recently, Voces8 has released an album of Christmas classics arranged especially for the group. Entitled ‘Snowed
In’ the disc has already received wide critical acclaim across Europe. Voces8’s next release will be an album entitled; ‘From Gibbons to Gershwin’ in April this year.
