Martin Neary
|
Martin Neary, who was Organist and Master of the Choristers at Winchester Cathedral (197287) and at Westminster Abbey (1988-98), first came to prominence in 1963 as a prize-winner at the first St. Albans International Organ Festival. He quickly established a reputation as one of England’s leading organists, with numerous appearances at the Royal Festival Hall and recital tours throughout the world. As organist and as conductor, he has championed the music of many contemporary composers, in particular Jonathan Harvey and John Tavener, with over thirty premières. He has also been much involved in the early music movement in England, and his numerous recordings include a CD of Purcell Music for Queen Mary, with the Westminster Abbey Choir and the New London Consort, which received a Grammy nomination. |
With both Winchester Cathedral and Westminster Abbey choirs, Martin Neary devised many innovative concert programmes. He led these choirs on twenty-five overseas tours, including appearances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and in the Kremlin, introducing foreign audiences to many new British works.
